Stuart Woodward at the Saudi Arabia Social Housing Development Summit
24 October 2011

Stuart Woodward, Managing Director of Levvel has recently attended the Saudi Arabia Social Housing Development Summit in Riyadh, and gave a presentation on the key role of the government in supplying social housing, using international case studies which illustrated housing programmes which have succeeded and some which have not. In addition, he spoke at the round up session at the end of the conference where he emphasised the economical benefits of developing a mature affordable housing market within the existing housing market to ensure there is good access to housing for all income groups.

While in Riyadh, Stuart met with the Ministry of Housing to discuss the countries plans to build 500,000 new homes nationwide. He also met with private developers and contractors to advise on how they can present their house-building proposals to the government, particularly focusing on the Affordable Housing sector.

'Saudi Arabia has a unique opportunity to l benefit from the experiences, successes and failures of other countries' affordable housing programmes,' says Stuart Woodward.

'Most affordable housing programmes evolve over hundreds of years, but I hope Saudi Arabia can fast track their solutions, to provide the millions of homes needed for t the young people and workers of the Kingdom. The problem will not be simply solved by building houses on cheap land which is sometimes away from the jobs and infrastructure - it is a case of changing peoples expectations, requirements, living patterns and working environments. It is a very exciting time for KSA and when correctly implemented , the housing programme will provide a good housing stock to ensure a successful, viable future for the country.'

'I am very pleased to have been invited to participate in the conference and I particularly enjoyed the panel discussions which I think raised some very interesting issues and hopefully will lead to some imaginative solutions. I personally feel the answer for the Kingdom lies in joint ventures between the private house-building sector and the government. Levvel have previously advised government in the Middle East on planning and housing policy, and developers in Saudi Arabia on integrating Affordable Housing into their future business plan. Affordable Housing is vital for the country's growth but can also provide a profitable, viable business model for private house builders.'

'I would also like to thank everyone I met in Riyadh and the UK Trade and Investment who have advised and supported Levvel in the build up to my visit to Riyadh.
